Is A Touch Screen Laptop Your Best Choice? by George Hutton
More and more people these day are using laptop computers. All you have to do is go out and take a look around, and see all the different instances of people doing work, playing games, doing homework, or just catching up on the news on their portable computers. With prices dropping rapidly, and technology on it’s ever increasing march forward, they seem to be the latest thing.
One seemingly recent technological advance that has actually been around a while, but has only lately been showing up on laptop computers is a touch screen. You don’t have to move your mouse around to manipulate the cursor on the screen, nor do you have to fool with that inconvenient little square in front of your keypad. You simply touch the screen wherever you’d like to move the cursor, and use the keyboard for the rest. If you have a smart phone, then you’re already familiar with touch screen technology.
One big factor that has always limited the commercial success of devices with a touch screen is the lifetime of the product itself. It’s tough to make a screen responsive enough to do exactly what you want it to do, yet robust enough to take a few years of tapping and pushing with your fingers. A few products that have touch screens that last a while, like smart phones, electronic dictionaries, and other devices, tend to have smaller screens, and the screens have limited interactivity.
But what about a laptop computer? Has technology advanced enough to warrant the purchase of a touch screen laptop? That is going to depend on how often you use your laptop, and how often you think you’ll use the touch screen function. Prices are generally more expensive, and you have one more thing that can malfunction. While these are usually covered by the factor warranty, or an extended warranty, it can be inconvenient to take your computer back to where you go it.
If you are the type that opens up your machine whenever you get a chance, and starts typing away, then perhaps you should consider getting a machine with this extra function. You won’t have to worry about counter space, or setting up any cumbersome mouse. If, on the other hand, you only use your machine where there’s plenty of space, like at school, at home, or at a coffee shop, then a touch screen might not be in your immediate future. Perhaps later, when prices come down a bit, and their durability is more assured.
All in all, touch screen computers are a fantastic technological advance that are a boon for some people. But if you are like me, and only use your computer in a few places, then buying a touch screen laptop probably isn’t all that important to you.
